Reviving a Legend: Jaco Nel’s 1967 Ford Mustang GT500 Eleanor Replica

For Jaco Nel, the allure of cars and racing has been a lifelong passion. Like many car enthusiasts, owning and driving a Mustang was a dream he harbored for years. “A Mustang is on all petrolheads' bucket lists,” Jaco remarks, and when the opportunity to own a 1967 Ford Mustang GT500 presented itself, he seized it. But this wasn’t just any Mustang; Jaco envisioned a replica of the iconic "Eleanor" from the movie *Gone in 60 Seconds*.

The Genesis of a Project
The journey began with a fortuitous find. Initially purchased in fair condition, the Mustang sported a yellow body with black stripes. While it was enjoyed in its original state for some time, Jaco's pursuit of perfection and his desire to replicate Eleanor led him to Generation Old School Benoni, where he tasked them with transforming the car into his dream machine.

Body Work and Paint
The transformation started with the body. Despite the fair initial condition, the team at GOS Benoni decided to strip the vehicle down entirely. Opting for a meticulous hand-sanding process over sandblasting, they prepared the car for a complete overhaul. The exterior was repainted, and the black stripes were intricately painted on rather than applied as decals, true to the Eleanor design.

Inside, the Mustang received a luxurious upgrade with black Nappa leather throughout, new carpeting, a black hood lining, and extensive sound deadening. The entire process, from body preparation to the final coat of paint, took approximately four months. The custom color, mixed in-house, gives the car a unique and personal touch, while staying true to Eleanor's signature look.

Chassis and Suspension
Maintaining the original chassis was crucial, but improvements were necessary for better performance and comfort. The car now features adjustable coil-overs on all corners, chosen for their balance of usability and comfort. Gavin Wilkens upgraded the differential to a limited-slip version, enhancing the car's handling and performance.

Braking and Powertrain
Safety and performance were equally prioritized with upgraded Vari brakes and braided hoses. Under the hood lies a beastly 427 engine, rebuilt by Gavin Wilkens, mated to a C4 3-speed automatic transmission. While exact horsepower figures weren't disclosed, the combination promises exhilarating performance. The exhaust system, crafted by TNT, complements the powertrain with a throaty roar.

Interior and Comfort
The interior of Jaco's Mustang is a testament to luxury and attention to detail. Generation Old School Benoni crafted a custom interior featuring black Nappa leather on all panels, black carpeting, and a hood lining with added sound deadening. The dashboard received modern upgrades, including a center-mounted rev counter and an air conditioning system, ensuring comfort on every drive. A wood steering wheel adds a classic touch to the sophisticated interior.

Wheels and Exterior Details
American Racing Shelby replica wheels wrapped in Michelin rubber provide the perfect blend of style and performance. Jaco opted for full chrome wheels, adding a touch of brilliance to the car's exterior. Upgraded Hella spotlights and Narva LED main headlights ensure the Mustang is as practical as it is beautiful, while the extended range fuel tank highlights Jaco's philosophy of using his cars as they were meant to be used.

Unique Features and Final Touches
A standout feature of Jaco's Mustang is the NOS bottle with a flip switch fitted in the center tunnel, complemented by a "Go Baby Go" button on the gearshift, a nod to the car’s racing spirit and the iconic scenes from *Gone in 60 Seconds*. The entire rebuild, spanning approximately ten months, resulted in a vehicle that surpasses the original vision.

Eleanor's Legacy
Eleanor originated in the 1974 film *Gone in 60 Seconds*, created by H.B. "Toby" Halicki. Eleanor is the only Ford Mustang to receive star title credits in a movie. The original Eleanor was a 1971 fastback restyled in 1973 for the film, painted a distinctive pale yellow. The film gained cult status in the '70s, cementing Eleanor's place in automotive and cinematic history.

Looking Ahead
With the Mustang GT500 project completed, Jaco is already planning his next build: an Abarth Fiat 600 Turbo. Reflecting on the journey, Jaco extends his gratitude to the teams and individuals who brought his vision to life, including Gavin Wilkens Racing, Auto Magic, Vari Brakes, and Generation Old School Benoni.

In Jaco Nel's 1967 Ford Mustang GT500 Eleanor Replica, passion meets precision, creating a masterpiece that is not only a tribute to a classic but also a celebration of modern craftsmanship and relentless pursuit of perfection.
