Nissan Teases R32 GT-R Electrified with EV Powertrain
Nissan is gearing up to electrify its GT-R nameplate with a unique project in the works, an “R32 EV” model. While fans may be eagerly anticipating an all-new hybrid generation, this electric show car is generating a lot of buzz. Nissan has released a short video on YouTube and Twitter, featuring the rear end of an R32 GT-R revving its turbocharged 6-cylinder engine before revealing the “R32 EV” title on the screen. The automaker has even launched a mini-website, hinting that more teasers are on the way.
According to Nissan, the idea for the R32 EV came from an engineer who joined the company out of admiration for the original model. He reportedly said, “I want to build a more exciting car by adding the latest electrification technology that I am involved with to my favorite car.” This electric show car could feature Nissan's dual-motor setup, which powers the Ariya and could be a fitting choice for the GT-R.
The R32 GT-R originally produced 276 hp, while the most potent Ariya variant boasts 389 hp. With this in mind, Nissan could potentially enhance the dual electric motors to produce even more power for this latest electric show car.While some fans may lament the sacrifice of a classic R32 GT-R, Nissan only produced 43,937 units of this model between 1989 and 1994. As such, the loss of a single example is not as significant as some may think. It is highly likely that the Nissan GT-R R32 EV will remain a one-off electromod, demonstrating what is possible when combining legendary cars with modern technology. However, it remains to be seen if fans would want to swap the iconic RB26 engine for a pair of electric motors, even if they provide more power.
