Some project cars are built to chase horsepower. Others are built to win trophies. But every so often, a build comes along that's about something far more meaningful—creating memories, learning new skills, and sharing a passion across generations.
This beautifully restored Volkswagen Beetle is one of those projects.
Purchased during the COVID-19 lockdown as a way to stay busy and make the most of an uncertain time, what started as a simple project soon became a labour of love. Over countless hours in the garage, the Beetle was transformed into a stunning blend of classic Volkswagen heritage and carefully selected modern performance upgrades.
A Timeless Exterior
Finished in a sleek Nardo Grey, the Beetle strikes the perfect balance between classic styling and modern sophistication. The understated colour gives the iconic shape a fresh, contemporary appearance while allowing the craftsmanship behind the restoration to shine.
The build sits on Empi GT8 wheels, paired with an adjustable front suspension that allows the stance to be fine-tuned while improving drivability. Disc brakes on all four corners provide significantly improved stopping power, bringing modern braking performance to this air-cooled classic.
A Driver-Focused Interior
Inside, the Beetle has been completely refreshed with new upholstery and a carefully curated selection of upgrades that enhance both style and functionality.
The dashboard features forged carbon gauge panels, housing a full set of SP gauges, including an Air-Fuel Ratio (AFR) gauge to keep a close eye on engine performance. An Empi T-Bar shifter delivers that unmistakable classic Volkswagen feel, while the Momo Prototipo Black Edition steering wheel completes a clean, purposeful cockpit inspired by vintage motorsport.
Air-Cooled Performance
Power comes from a professionally assembled 1776cc air-cooled Volkswagen engine, built to offer reliable performance while staying true to the character that has made Beetles legendary for decades.
The engine features:
- 90.5mm Mahle forged pistons
- FFR counterweighted crankshaft
- CB Performance Eagle 2242 camshaft
- CB ultra-lightweight lifters
- OEM VW 041 cylinder heads (39x32mm)
- Empi single high-rev valve springs
- CB Performance chromoly retainers and keepers
- 1.1 solid shaft rockers
- OEM aluminium pushrods
- Fully balanced rotating assembly
- Twin 36 Dellorto DRLA carburettors
- 9:1 compression ratio
- Empi merged exhaust system
- Empi Slimline extra sump
- 26mm full-flow oil pump
- Complete full-flow oiling system
- 12lb lightened flywheel
- PDP Shockwave distributor
The result is an engine that offers crisp throttle response, dependable reliability, and the unmistakable sound and character that only an air-cooled Volkswagen can deliver.
Built for the Right Reasons
While the specification sheet is impressive, the true value of this Beetle can't be measured by engine components or performance upgrades.
This project represents time well spent, skills learned, and memories made. From its complete respray and refreshed interior to the fully rebuilt engine and countless carefully chosen modifications, every stage of the build reflects dedication, patience, and genuine enthusiasm.
Today, the Beetle remains a much-loved family car—shared and enjoyed together rather than hidden away. It stands as a reminder that some of the best automotive projects aren't simply about building a great car; they're about the experiences created while bringing it to life.
This Volkswagen Beetle is proof that when passion, craftsmanship, and family come together, the result is something truly special.
