Volkswagen Motorsport has announced the line-up of drivers and cars which will be competing in the annual Simola Hillclimb racing event. Now in its 13th year, the Simola Hillclimb event will take place from 4 to 7 May 2023.

Monster Jam starts in Cape Town at the DHL Stadium on Saturday, 22 April followed by FNB Stadium Johannesburg on Saturday, 29 April and ending at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, 06 May for one exciting event only at 6pm in each city. In addition, Monster Jam also features breath-taking Freestyle Motocross (FMX) exhibitions. This is unbeatable full-throttle fun for the entire family. The popularity of Monster Jam in South Africa has resulted in Pit Party tickets being sold out across all three cities in record time!
We spoke to Willem van der Walt from Derwalt, the company that put in months of work behind the scenes to make this amazing event happen.
Preparation
Preparation for Monster Jam starts over a year before the event from the sourcing of material to everything that goes in to making the track on the day. First the stadium needs to be booked and scouted to ensure the pitches underneath dont get damaged and then the logistics to get everything on site and on time are planned in detail.
We are very excited about planning the second instalment of the Cape 1000 rally after the massive success of this years event. However, we have been surprised and overwhelmed by the response for next years event with over 50 cars already registered. Therefore, we are really excited to create another world-class motoring rally for 2023 in the Western Cape, says Event Director, Vanessa Crichton.
Its that time of year again when the most fervent and passionate automotive enthusiasts submit their entry applications for South Africas premier motoring and motorsport lifestyle event the Simola Hillclimb in Knysna.
This event has grown in stature and support across South Africa and internationally, and is held in the highest regard amongst both competitors and spectators. Its success has been built on a proven formula of delivering a truly unrivalled line-up of iconic cars and legendary drivers. Also, they take on the challenging 1.9km Simola Hill course each year.
Athletic Training and Gear
To drive a Monster Jam truck you need specific gear. For neck support, there is a specifically designed harness that provides stability during impact. Then, there is a fire suit, it is custom fitted and fire-resistant. Each suit is tailored to match the theme of the truck.
To become a Monster Jam truck driver you need to attend Monster Jam University. Jip, athletes train at Monster Jam University for over 100 hours before competing in an event.
