The Story of the ’54 Chevy 2 Door

There’s something about a 1954 Chevy 2 Door that just hits differently. The lines. The stance. That proper old-school presence. After searching for a long time for the right one, I finally found what I’d been looking for — a rolling chassis. And honestly? That was perfect. Enough shoeboxes around… this one had to be different.

To bring the vision to life, I bought a running Jaguar XJ6 to use for the build. In 2012, the real journey began with a full frame-off restoration. It wasn’t a quick refresh or patch-up job — this was a complete transformation from the ground up.

Apart from the 350 small block Chevy (SBK) block and crank, the motor was built entirely new. Everything was carefully selected and assembled to create a reliable, powerful setup. The engine was mated to a 4L60 gearbox, giving the car smooth cruising ability with modern drivability to match its classic looks.

Inside, comfort was just as important as performance. Electric Mercedes-Benz C180 seats were fitted, adding a touch of luxury to the old-school Chevy cabin. Air conditioning was installed — because cruising in South Africa’s heat demands it. The entire car, including the boot, was cork-lined and fitted with sound-deadening material. Underfelt was laid before the carpets went in, ensuring a solid, quiet, and refined interior feel.

The stock Jaguar XJ6 rims were widened by 50mm to get the stance just right. It’s those small details that make a build stand out — subtle, but intentional.

Since 2015, we’ve been proudly attending Motor Shows and Street Rod Nationals all over South Africa with the Diamond City Street Rod Club. The car has become more than just a build; it’s part of a community and a lifestyle.

Performance-wise, she cruises comfortably at GPS 130 km/h, delivering around 8 km per litre. There’s no sound system — and none is needed. The dual straight-through pipes provide all the music we could ever want.

From the beginning, the dream was clear: a front sun visor, eyelids, covered rear wheel arches, and white wall tyres. Classic touches that complete the timeless street rod look. Seeing that vision come together made every hour of work worth it.

For us, it’s not just about the car. It’s about the memories. My wife and I love cruising around, turning heads, and most importantly — putting smiles on people’s faces wherever we go.

That’s what it’s really about.
