Rust-Ridden Glory Johan van Eck's Surprise 1948 Chevy Pick-up Build

What started as a pristine 1948 Chevy Pick-up build in Johan van Eck’s workshop at Exclusive Rods and Customs took a hard left turn when a client locked eyes on Johan’s dark green, patina-rich cab. “My brother would love that!” he exclaimed, and just like that, the project shifted gears. The mission? To create a badass, patina-styled truck as a surprise birthday gift for his client’s brother—an aficionado of rusty, rugged classics. The catch? The build had to stay a secret and be done at breakneck speed.

The Hunt for Parts
Building a truck with an aesthetic as weathered and storied as the Karoo’s landscapes came with challenges. The cab wasn’t complete, and matching patina-styled parts proved elusive. After exhausting all usual avenues, Johan stumbled upon a goldmine—or rather, a rust-mine—on a farm near Springbok. There, he found two battered cabs and a load bin, left to the mercy of the Karoo elements. Luck was on his side: the bin had been lying upside down, with its interior remarkably preserved. Only the bumper was a write-off, completely rusted out.

Strengthening the Bones
Johan’s team retained just one meter of the original chassis, reinforcing it extensively to handle the upgraded components. A custom-built 65-liter second-stage stainless steel fuel tank was tucked in, ensuring this beast had the range to match its growl. Over the course of the build, parts were sourced from at least four other donor trucks, resulting in a Frankenstein’s monster of vintage steel. One standout detail? An original load-chain, now repurposed as a functional and aesthetic rear-loader accessory.

Attention to Detail (and Rust)
Bodywork on this truck wasn’t your typical showroom finish. Using arc welding—a deliberately rough method—any repairs blended seamlessly with the rugged patina. A dented left fender and mysterious bullet holes near the rear only added to the truck’s character, as did the Welkom Slaghuis, Pofadder signage on the left door, installed just a week before delivery. This wasn’t just a truck; it was a rolling storybook of grit and history.

Under the Hood
Lurking beneath the weathered hood is a 327ci Chevy V8 paired with a Turbo 350 transmission and a high-performance shift kit. This 1948 CHEVY PICK-UP  doesn’t just look mean—it rumbles, growls, and snaps with authority. The extensively upgraded suspension system, featuring air ride suspension and an adjustable limited-slip differential, ensures the power isn’t just for show. It’s got the stance, and it’s got the moves.

Modern Comfort Meets Old-School Cool
While the exterior screams “backroads bruiser,” the interior is a whole different story. Johan fitted the 1948 CHEVY PICK-UP  with electrically adjustable SRT seats for unmatched comfort, along with modern touches like a fully functional odometer, adjustable steering column, power steering, and a hidden audio system stashed in the glove compartment. It’s the perfect blend of vintage vibes and contemporary convenience.

The Final Test
On its maiden test run, the truck exceeded expectations. Even with the original rubber seals, the ride was whisper-quiet—no rattles, no squeaks. She tracked straight as an arrow and cruised smoother than anyone expected.

The Big Reveal
Deadline day arrived, and the patina-loving birthday boy was speechless. Overcome with emotion, he took in every detail of the one-of-a-kind gift. A labor of love and ingenuity, Johan van Eck and his team at Exclusive Rods delivered a masterpiece that perfectly balanced rugged history with modern capability.

From its rust-rich body to the throaty roar of its V8, this 1948 CHEVY PICK-UP  is more than just a truck—it’s a tribute to passion, craftsmanship, and the timeless appeal of patina. Maximum Overdrive vibes? You bet. And we’re here for it.
