My Big Dream Came True – The Story of a Classic Truck Resurrection

Every car enthusiast has that one dream project – a vehicle that captures the heart at first sight and refuses to let go. For one lucky South African owner, that dream came in the most unexpected way. What began as a casual visit to a friend turned into the beginning of an incredible automotive journey.

A Chance Encounter

While visiting friends at Hartbeespoort Dam, the author was introduced to something far more exciting than expected. His friend proudly wanted to show off her new Honda motorcycle, but the moment the garage doors opened, all attention shifted.

There it was – a classic truck quietly standing in the garage.

The motorcycle was instantly forgotten. Conversations quickly turned from two wheels to four as Nic, the owner, revealed that he was considering selling the truck. Time constraints had kept him from restoring it, and he was ready to let it go.

Then came the big question: How much?

To the author’s amazement, the asking price was only R5500. Without hesitation, he called his wife, asked her to transfer the money immediately, and sealed the deal before there was any chance of a change of heart.

From Hartbeespoort to George

Living in George in the Western Cape meant that collecting the truck was no small task. A week later, trailer in tow, they returned to fetch their new treasure. There was just one issue – the windscreen had broken during a previous move. But for a true enthusiast, that was hardly a dealbreaker.

The truck was officially his.

The Restoration Begins

Back home, the real work started. Parts had to be sourced, plans had to be made, and professionals brought on board. Coastal Customs in Mossel Bay took on the restoration project, while many of the spares were sourced through Brandon at All American Auto and friends in the USA.

The transformation was underway.

A Personal Touch in Every Detail

The chosen paint color? Aqua Marine Blue – the birthstone color of the owner’s wife. As he humorously notes, including something meaningful for her was essential to keeping everyone happy!

Under the hood, the truck received serious upgrades:

  • A small block 350 V8 engine

  • Holley performance carburetor

  • Six-speed Lumina manual gearbox

  • Upgraded original Chevy disc brakes

While many exterior components such as bumpers and the grille were chromed in Johannesburg, the quality unfortunately didn’t quite meet expectations. Still, the truck was shaping up beautifully.

Built for Show and Go

This was no ordinary restoration – it was a full custom build.

Most engine components were chromed to perfection, adding shine and style under the bonnet. The truck rides on stunning 20-inch Chrome 142 Legend 6 mags imported from America, wrapped in Pirelli 265/45 R20 tyres. Even the steering column received the chrome treatment.

Inside, classic meets modern:

  • The speedometer remains original in miles per hour

  • A wood steering wheel keeps the vintage feel

  • Old-school radio upgraded with USB and memory card functionality

  • Custom-built sound system featuring:

    • Cerwin Vega 600W amplifier

    • 10-inch subwoofer

    • Built-in sound boxes behind the seats

Custom Craftsmanship Everywhere

No detail was overlooked:

  • Custom-made door panels

  • Electric windows

  • New door handles

  • A metal tailgate plate sourced from the South Cape Old Car Show

  • Internal tailgate latches for a clean exterior look

The load bin received special attention, finished with elegant rosewood panels and chrome strips, along with a stainless-steel mirrored front panel that creates a striking visual effect.

Even the fuel tank was relocated to the rear of the load bin, with the fuel cap cleverly positioned inside – a unique and practical modification.

The Final Masterpiece

After countless hours, careful planning, and plenty of passion, the end result is nothing short of spectacular. What started as an old, neglected truck has been transformed into a head-turning showpiece – a blend of classic American muscle and modern custom flair.

To add one final personal touch, the number plate was chosen to reflect the owner’s birth year: 1961.

A Dream Realized

This project is more than just a vehicle restoration. It’s a story of opportunity, passion, and dedication. From a surprise garage find to a fully customized masterpiece, this truck represents a dream that truly came true.

For any classic car lover, it’s proof that sometimes the best journeys begin with a simple visit to a friend – and an unexpected glance into an open garage.
