Some cars are bought. Some are built. And then there are the rare ones that come full circle—cars that leave, live a life of their own, and somehow find their way back home. This Nissan 1400, affectionately known as the “Champ,” is one of those stories.
For over twelve years, this bakkie has been more than just a vehicle—it has been a part of the family’s journey.
Where It All Began
The story starts with a meaningful gesture. The Champ was originally purchased as a first car—a gift for a son. Like many first cars, it wasn’t just about transportation; it represented independence, milestones, and the beginning of a new chapter.
But as life often goes, the bakkie eventually changed hands. It was sold to a friend, and from there, passed on again to someone else. For many vehicles, that would have been the end of the story.
But not this one.
The Pull of Sentiment
Time passed, but the connection never faded. The memories tied to the Nissan 1400 remained strong—strong enough to bring it back.
In a move driven purely by sentiment, the decision was made to buy the Champ back. It wasn’t about practicality or necessity. It was about preserving a piece of family history.
And that’s when the real journey began.
Meeting the Right Builder
About four years ago, everything changed with a single encounter.
After coming across a Nissan Champ build by a craftsman named William Hanker from NFNR, it became immediately clear—this was the person who could bring the vision to life.
There was no hesitation. The decision was instant.
This wasn’t going to be a simple refresh or minor upgrade. The goal was clear: rebuild the Champ from the ground up into something exceptional.
A Ground-Up Transformation
The build that followed was nothing short of meticulous.
The bakkie underwent a full bolt-and-nut restoration, stripped down to its core and rebuilt piece by piece. Every component was either restored, upgraded, or replaced—ensuring that the final product would be as precise as it was powerful.
This wasn’t just about aesthetics. It was about engineering, performance, and attention to detail.
Performance Meets Precision
Underneath the surface, the Champ received serious upgrades that transformed it into a completely different machine.
At the heart of the build:
- A fully forged turbo setup, delivering both strength and performance
- A 22R gearbox conversion, enhancing durability and drivability
- A custom-built M75 limited slip differential, engineered by Gear & Axle in Pinetown
The result is a bakkie that doesn’t just look the part—it performs with authority.
Every element was carefully considered, with NFNR handling the majority of the transformation, ensuring a cohesive and high-quality build throughout.
More Than Just a Build
What makes this Nissan 1400 truly special isn’t just the modifications or the craftsmanship—it’s the story behind it.
It’s a vehicle that:
- Started as a father’s gift
- Became part of someone else’s journey
- And ultimately found its way back home
Now, it stands as a fully restored, performance-driven machine—carrying both history and horsepower in equal measure.
A Legacy on Wheels
In the world of custom builds, it’s easy to focus on specs, power figures, and aesthetics. But every now and then, a build reminds everyone why cars matter in the first place.
This Champ is more than metal, paint, and performance.
It’s memory. It’s meaning. It’s legacy.
And most importantly—it’s home again.
