## The Genesis of a Dream
Matthew Eglinton's automotive passion ignited early, kindled by dreams of building a 1936 hotrod with his father—a dream that, though never realized, laid the groundwork for his future endeavors. Years later, after a detour into the marine tank hobby, a project involving his wife's uncle's 300ZX rekindled his love for cars. This experience set Matthew on a quest for his own project car, a journey that eventually led him to a neglected 1981 Datsun 280ZX 2+2. Despite it being a non-runner and far from his initial dream cars—a MK 4 Toyota Supra & DMC DeLorean—Matthew saw potential in the 280ZX. With the help of his neighbor Lionel, he embarked on a transformative journey that would span 3.5 years, turning the Datsun into a custom-built marvel.
## A Collaborative Effort
Matthew's project was a labor of love, largely self-built in his double garage but significantly supported by a cast of friends and family. Lionel's initial assistance in assessing the car's potential was crucial, marking the beginning of a collaborative effort that would define the project. Matthew's wife, Natasha, alongside Nathaniel, Corian, Chris, Callum, Josh, Brannigan, Terrance, Exavior, Sean, Jason, Shawn, Brett, Jared, and Gabby, each played a role in the build. Whether offering technical assistance, moral support, or hands-on help, their contributions were invaluable.
## The Build: A Journey of Customization
From the outset, Matthew aimed to imbue the 280ZX with a unique blend of JDM and rally style, while overcoming the challenges of sourcing parts in South Africa. Virtually every panel was customized, from the widened and stretched front valance derived from a 240ZX to the modified rear duck wing and bespoke rear wing that altered the car's silhouette. Custom side vents, hood vents designed and 3D printed, shaved doors with keyless entry, and one-of-a-kind tail lights were among the myriad customizations that set this Datsun apart.
Matthew tackled the bodywork himself, opting for a distinctive Nardo Grey RAPTOR lining—a durable, textured finish that adds a menacing yet sophisticated look to the car. This choice of paint was not only aesthetic but practical, offering durability and uniqueness in the sea of custom builds.
## Mechanical Mastery
Under the hood, the 280ZX received a significant overhaul, with Matthew and Lionel breathing new life into the original motor. Enhanced with a custom-built turbo adapter and a mild street cam, the engine now delivers approximately 160kw at the wheels. The suspension and brakes were also upgraded, incorporating bigger 4 pot calipers from an old Toyota Forerunner and modifications to the rear cross member to improve stance and handling.
## Interior Innovations
The interior of the Datsun showcases Matthew's dedication to custom craftsmanship. Self-built with a keen eye for detail, the cabin features custom-printed materials, modern gauges, and a unique speedo display. The seats, sourced from Autostyle, complement the custom-built subwoofer and door speakers, creating a harmonious blend of style and function.
## Gratitude and Future Aspirations
As Matthew's Datsun 280ZX 2+2 stands as a beacon of what can be achieved with vision, perseverance, and a little help from friends, he extends his heartfelt thanks to all who were part of this remarkable journey. The support of companies like MADD Apparel, Air Lux, Gang R, Mr Turbo, Avcon, Raptor Lining Upol, SA PAR, Fury, Autostyle, eBay, and Fastec was instrumental in turning the dream into reality.
Looking ahead, Matthew hints at the possibility of another project, inviting sponsors to join him on his next automotive adventure. His journey with the 1981 Datsun 280ZX 2+2 is a powerful narrative of automotive passion, showcasing not just his talent and dedication but the collective spirit and support of the community. This build is more than a car; it's a testament to the dreams and determination of a dedicated builder and his supportive circle.
