The Custom FJ45 Land Cruiser A South African Icon

When it comes to building hot rods in South Africa, one might think of American muscle or classic European models. However, Andre and Arthur Allers from Allers Rods & Customs decided to take a different route by creating a rod from one of South Africa's most iconic brands, Toyota.

While Toyota itself is Japanese, the Land Cruiser and the Hilux have been top sellers in South Africa for decades. These vehicles are not only farmer favorites but also hold a special place in the hearts of many South Africans. With this in mind, the Allers brothers set out to create something truly unique: a custom FJ45 Land Cruiser rod that embodies the spirit of South African motoring.

The project began with Andre's vision of a "regte Suid Afrikaanse" build, or a true South African build. He wanted to show the local hot rod scene that it was possible to create something exceptional without relying on American influences. The choice of the FJ45 Land Cruiser, a model that first hit the roads in 1975, was a nod to South Africa's motoring history.

The result is a stunning rod that pays homage to its roots while pushing the boundaries of customization. Finished in the iconic Stone Beige and Old English White paint combo, down to the original paint code, this FJ45 Land Cruiser rod has captured the attention of enthusiasts worldwide.

But creating this masterpiece wasn't easy. The Allers brothers dedicated 1200 hours of hard work to bring their vision to life. Working on the project in their spare time, often in the early mornings, evenings, and weekends, they poured their hearts and souls into every detail.

One of the key aspects of the build was to ensure that all parts were locally sourced and easily available in South Africa. This not only added to the authenticity of the build but also made it practical for daily use. The rod has since traveled over 10,000 km, including a tour of the KZN Midlands Meander and a 4700 km round trip to Cape Town and back, showcasing its reliability and practicality.

Under the hood, the FJ45 Land Cruiser rod boasts a new generation 1UZ engine, producing 300hp, paired with a 5-speed auto box. The custom chassis and suspension, designed in-house by the Allers team, ensure a smooth and comfortable ride, even on long journeys.

The attention to detail is evident throughout the build, with custom touches like the small jam jar indicators from an old Datsun Blue Birds, OEM mirrors, and spotlights used as taillights. The interior features a blend of modern technology and vintage style, with an Acewell gauge, Momo steering wheel, and Jeep Wrangler seats.

In conclusion, Andre and Arthur Allers have created a masterpiece that is unmistakably South African. Their FJ45 Land Cruiser rod is a testament to their passion for hot rodding and their commitment to pushing the boundaries of customization. It's not just a car; it's a symbol of South African motoring heritage, and a true work of art on wheels.
