1957 Chevy 3100 Pick Up: Lemmy Tribute by Kings Customs Garage

Alex Fraser's journey with the 1957 Chevy 3100 began with a simple yet profound desire to own a vehicle that wasn't just another classic truck but one imbued with character and modern functionality. It wasn't his personal dream car, but he loved the shape and saw potential in creating something truly unique.

The project started when Alex contacted Kings Customs Garage via Facebook, requesting a build of a classic pickup. After discussions on budget and design, it was decided to go for the 1957 Chevy 3100. Alex found the shell and chassis in someone's backyard in Primrose, and thus began the transformation journey.

Body Work and Customization
The body was in rough shape and required a lot of work. Classic Restorations Centurion took on the task, starting with sandblasting by Sandblasting Boys. The entire process took a year. The team didn't stick to the standard look; instead, they crafted a curved tailgate and rear end to enhance the vehicle's lines.

The truck boasts a black patina finish with base and clear paint done by Classic Restorations Centurion, maintaining an old-school aesthetic with a modern twist.

Chassis and Suspension
The original chassis was retained but modified with Jaguar suspensions in the front and a 4-link suspension in the rear. Full air ride suspension was installed, and all discs and calipers were replaced with 2020 Chevrolet Camaro SS parts. This setup perfectly suited the vehicle's air ride and width.

Powertrain
Under the hood lies an LM7 motor built by the Kings Customs team. Originally planning for a 383 stroker motor, they pivoted to a more powerful setup with an LM7 and twin T66 turbos. This combination delivers an impressive 850 bhp on the dyno, though it's detuned for daily driving. The custom stainless steel exhaust and top-mounted intercooler with downward-blowing fans complete the engine bay.

The gearbox also came from Rocket 88, ensuring seamless power delivery.

Interior and Electronics
The interior is a masterpiece of custom work. The team installed red leather seats sourced from a Hyundai IX35, minus the headrests. A top-tier Pioneer sound system with a fast charger pad and a clip-off tablet radio enhances the in-car experience. Hidden air conditioning behind the seats keeps the cabin cool without disrupting the vintage aesthetic.

All the gauges are digital, imported from the US, and the vehicle features keyless entry and start/stop for modern convenience.

Wheels and Tires
The truck rides on 20-inch Rat rod steel wheels, 9j all around, a proprietary brand. The tire setup includes 275/40/R20 at the rear and 245/40/R20 at the front, giving it a robust and aggressive stance.

Unique Features
The Lemmy tribute is rich with personal touches, such as a custom fuel tank hand-painted with Lemmy Kilmister's image and hidden LED strip taillights. The grille is custom-made with 386 Ace of Spades laser cuts, a nod to the legendary musician. The load bed, crafted from Swedish pallet wood, features a cast-in-resin replica of Lemmy Kilmister's signature Rickenbacker bass guitar, adding a unique and personal touch to the build.

Reflection and Future Projects
The build took three years and deviated from the original plan, evolving with each step. Alex expresses deep gratitude to his wife, who supported him throughout the process.

As for the future, Kings Customs Garage has a lineup of exciting projects, including two 70’s CSL E9 BMWs, a 56 Chevy pickup, a 48 Chevy pickup, a 4x4 Beetle, and a complete custom JDM car. The 1957 Chevy 3100 stands as a testament to their craftsmanship and creativity, blending classic style with modern performance.
